Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was an American novelist and short story writer. Her works show the lives of people of the late nineteenth century, the times of decline in American history. She was the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921. Wharton also was familiar with many famous people of the time, including President Theodore Roosevelt. This book includes two wonderful works of literature: the tale about love and divorce Madame de Treymes and a short story The Triumph Of Night.

  1. Priest Daniel Sysoev Christian Mystery. The Order of Divine Services with Commentary for Beginners. На английском языке
Priest Daniel Sysoev Christian Mystery. The Order of Divine Services with Commentary for Beginners. На английском языке
For many beginning believers, remaining attentive throughout the church service is no easy task. Numerous thoughts overcome the worshipper, forcing him to remain amid earthly cares. This occurs due to a lack of understanding of the language in which the services are conducted, and of the meaning of the texts read during the sacred rites. The purpose of this book is to help those desiring to understand the essence and beauty of Orthodox worship to discover the full essence of what is taking place in the church, beginning with the remembrance of the creation of the world at the All-night Vigil, and ending with the very heart of the service, the greatest mystery of the Christian, Holy Communion, at which the believers soul invisibly yet palpably unites with the Lord Himself. For what could be sweeter to the soul than the unfeigned realization of the words, Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim, and chant the thrice-holy hymn unto the Life-creating Trinity, now lay aside all earthly care, that we may receive the King of all, Who cometh invisibly upborne in triumph by the ranks of angels. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia?
  2. Lawrence T. E. Seven Pillars of Wisdom
Lawrence T. E. Seven Pillars of Wisdom
With an Introduction by Angus Calder. As Angus Calder states in his introduction to this edition, Seven Pillars of Wisdom is one of the major statements about the fighting experience of the First World War. Lawrences younger brothers, Frank and Will, had been killed on the Western Front in 1915. Seven Pillars of Wisdom, written between 1919 and 1926, tells of the vastly different campaign against the Turks in the Middle East - one which encompasses gross acts of cruelty and revenge and ends in a welter of stink and corpses in the disgusting hospital in Damascus. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is no Boys Own Paper tale of Imperial triumph, but a complex work of high literary aspiration which stands in the tradition of Melville and Dostoevsky, and alongside the writings of Yeats, Eliot and Joyce.
  3. Priest Daniel Sysoev Explanation of the Apocalypse
Priest Daniel Sysoev Explanation of the Apocalypse
For many people the Apocalypse is associated with catastrophies and terrifying events, the coming of the antichrist, natural disasters, wars, and the end of the world. Given this attitude it is natural to wish for these events to be delayed as long as possible. But the Apocalypse, the last and most enigmatic book of the Bible, tells us that the end of the world is merely a sign of the swiftly approaching great and long-awaited triumph of good over evil, of deliverance from the power of the devil and death, as it is said: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away (Rev. 21:4). Joy at the advent of eternal and gladsome life with God must overcome fear of the birth pangs of the new universe. In this work Priest Daniel Sysoev gives an accurate interpretation of this book of the Bible, in keeping with the Holy Tradition of the Orthodox Church, and expounds on the meaning of what lies concealed within its pages. Approved for publication by the Publications Board of the Russian Orthodox Church.

    Simmons Dan Endymion
The multiple-award-winning science fiction master returns to the universe that is his greatest triumph--the world of Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion --with a novel even more magnificent than its predecessors. Dan Simmonss Hyperion was an immediate sensation on its first publication in 1989. This staggering multifaceted tale of the far future heralded the conquest of the science fiction field by a man who had already won the World Fantasy Award for his first novel (Song of Kali) and had also published one of the most well-received horror novels in the field, Carrion Comfort. Hyperion went on to win the Hugo Award as Best Novel, and it and its companion volume, The Fall of Hyperion, took their rightful places in the science fiction pantheon of new classics. Now, six years later, Simmons returns to this richly imagined world of technological achievement, excitement, wonder and fear. Endymion is a story about love and memory, triumph and terror--an instant candidate for the fields highest honors.

Thoenes Christof Raphael. 1483-1520. The Invention of the High Renaissance
Influenced by his contemporaries Michelangelo and Leonardo, Raphael Santi (1483-1520) became, in his own right, one of the most important artists of the High Renaissance. Though Raphael painted many important works in his Florence period, including his famous Madonnas, it was his mature work in Rome that cemented his place in history, most notably the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican featuring his School of Athens and Triumph of Religion murals. This overview traces the lifes work of this Renaissance master who achieved the height of greatness in only two decades of creation and whose influential work paved the way for the Mannerist and Baroque movements.

  10. Shakespeare William The Great Comedies & Tragedies
Shakespeare William The Great Comedies & Tragedies
These comedies are among the best loved of Shakespeares plays. In each a problem emerges, is then intensified to a point of maximum confusion and potential upset, before the chaos is resolved, however improbably, into general goodwill and a spate of marriages. The triumph of these plays lies in the way they mingle humorous stage business and dexterous word play with a more serious study of identity, gender, dreaming, the meaning of love, even of the theatre itself. They reassure us that with all its faults, the world will always in the end be redeemable. Not for an age but for all time. So Ben Jonson established what we now take for granted: Shakespeares unique place among the worlds great authors. Romeo and Juliet shows us the archetypal story of fated young love; Hamlet, the tortured psyche of the young prince of Denmark; Othello, a strikingly modern representation of racial difference; King Lear, a man stripped of all material and psychological comforts; and Macbeth, a dark investigation of the origins and effects of, evil. The plays throw a fascinating light on the concerns of Shakespeares day, yet offer perennial insights into the nature of human emotion.

  17. Austen Jane Sense and sensibility
    Austen Jane Sense and sensibility
In the short summer night she learnt so much. She would have thought a woman would have died of shame. Instead of which, the shame died. Shame, which is fear: the deep organic shame, the old, old physical fear which crouches in the bodily roots of us, and can only be chased away by the sensual fire, at last it was roused up and routed by the phallic hunt of the man, and she had come to the real bed-rock of her nature, and was essentially shameless. She was her sensual self, naked and unashamed. She felt a triumph, almost a vainglory. So! That was how it was! That was life! That was how oneself really was. There was nothing left to disguise or be ashamed of. She shared her ultimate nakedness with a man, another being.
